The independent City of Colonial Heights has a land area of 8.15 square miles and a population of 17,770 citizens.  Situated on the Appomattox River in southeastern Virginia, Colonial Heights is strategically located on Interstate 95 near the intersection of Interstate 85. Colonial Heights is easily accessible to the major markets of the East Coast, and is located just 20 miles south of Richmond and 120 miles south of Washington, D.C.   

The center of “All Things Retail,” Colonial Heights has evolved into a key regional retail destination over the last twenty years.  Colonial Heights presents the only major retail center along Interstate 95 between Richmond and the North Carolina border, and has a retail trade area population of over 1.1 million.  The City promotes commercial development and the Colonial Heights market offers many profitable possibilities for retailers and developers.

Spring 2018

Colonial Heights continues to attract national business as well as the entrepreneur that wants to continue with their new idea. While there have been closings for national companies, Colonial Heights has remained strong in the retail sector. Sears in Colonial Heights recently closed, but this was outside the City’s control and part of a broader closing of Sears stores in other areas.

However, there are new and exciting things happening in the City. Colonial Heights has remained very strong in the unemployment area with consistently low unemployment figures. This sends a great message to businesses seeking new locations. Below are just a few things that will be taking place in 2018.     

  • Major renovations to Sheetz which re-opened in FebruarySheetzReOpening
  • Longhorn’s with scheduled opening in March
  • Skrimp Shack scheduled opening in February
  • Harbor Freight – taking 50% of the former HHGregg building and opening sometime mid-May
  • Site plan has been submitted for Sedona Tap House
  • Lundie Insurance building opening February-March, which will house Lundie Insurance, Sherwood Title, and Colonial Italian Grill
